The idea to use curling to raise money for Frontier College came originally from Peter Gzowski more than 20 years ago.
History
In 1986, celebrated Canadian journalist, Peter Gzowski, invited some of his family and friends to an informal golf tournament on his home course at The Briars in Jackson's Point, Ontario. When he said that he wanted to raise "a few bucks" for literacy it was the beginning of a long, prosperous, innovative and simple fundraising initiative.
Peter passed away in 2002 and is missed by Canadians everywhere, but perhaps never more than those who knew him at his favourite activity, golfing for literacy.
Today
The tradition lives on in every province and territory where PGI committees host events ranging from golf tournaments to bonspiels to raise funds to teach people to read and write and inspire Canadians to celebrate literacy.
Today, the PGIs are the most successful literacy fundraising events in Canada, generating more than $12.5 million (net funds).
Our Bonspiel for Literacy generates the same unique flavor and spirit that Peter Gzowski created and as experienced in our past PGI Golf Tournaments.
The Frontier College Bonspiel is a day-long event open to non-curlers and the most seasoned curlers. The emphasis is on fun over competition! This event is regarded as one of the best Bonspiels of the season, due to the support of Ridley Windows & Doors, dedicated volunteers, and corporate donors.
Each year we host a number of world-class curlers including Mike Harris and Paul Savage. The day includes a wonderful lunch, a musical performance by our house band, The Arrogant Worms and a reading from our Poet Laureate, who spends the day with us and writes a poem as a spectacular reminder of our day.

Past Poet Laureates have included: Douglas Bell, Kirk Elliott, Diane Francis, Mike Harris, John Kawaja, Ron Maclean, Murray McLauchlan, Shelagh Rogers & Scott Russell.
The next Bonspiel for Literacy will be held:
Thursday, January 17, 2013 at The Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club.
Come out to curl, come out to party or come out to watch!
