Literacy Programs in Alberta

Frontier College is Canada's original literacy organization. In Edmonton, we recruit volunteers to work with learners in the following literacy programs. We screen and train all of our volunteers before they go into the community. For more information or to volunteer with Frontier College in Edmonton, please call 780-487-4787 or 1-888-414-4787 or email edmonton@frontiercollege.ca.

Frontier College has a rich history in Alberta. The first Alberta-based Frontier College volunteer pitched a Reading Tent in Coalfields, AB in 1907. Subsequent Frontier College Labourer-Teachers were stationed on the Grand Trunk Pacific Rail gang at Wolf Creek, AB in 1909.

Reading Circles

One-on-one reading tutoring program for school aged children ages 5 and up. Learners are paired with a reading buddy for 1 hour a week to work on literacy based activities including paired reading, storytelling, and games. This program takes place at Edmonton Public Library Branches throughout Edmonton with programs taking place 6 days/week.

One-to-One Tutoring with Adults

One-on-one tutoring program for adult males involved in the justice system to encourage practical applications for literacy in daily life. Tutors and learners set goals and work on activities related to improving knowledge in key areas, including basic literacy, financial management, employment, and further education. This program takes place at an Edmonton institution once per week for 1.5 hours.

Family Literacy Workshops

In partnership with other community-based organizations, Frontier College provides a series of workshops for parents and caregivers to help support the educational success of their children. The workshops cover a variety of topics including helping your children with their homework and how to encourage literacy at home. Currently workshops are being provided in Cold Lake First Nations and Elizabeth Métis Settlement.
