Literacy Programs in Leamington, Ontario

Frontier College in Leamington is looking for volunteers to teach non-formal literacy skills to migrant farm workers and new immigrants to the area. Sessions are held for eight weeks beginning in March and again in September. Volunteers would need to donate two hours per week over the eight weeks.

As well, volunteers are needed for our Reading Buddy program. Volunteers are linked up with an elementary school aged child during his/her lunch hour.

If interested in either program, contact sfreeman@frontiercollege.ca or call 519-819-8457

Labourer-Teachers

The Labourer-Teacher program (LT for short) is the original literacy program of Frontier College. We recruit, train and send LTs to work and teach across Ontario.

Currently, Labourer-Teachers are placed primarily in agricultural settings: on farms and in processing plants. Labourer-Teachers do the same heavy labour jobs as the other workers. In peak season, this can mean 12 hours per day, 6-7 day per week. For this work, Labourer-Teachers are paid the same as their co-workers - usually minimum wage.

In addition to the physical work, Labourer-Teachers volunteer their time to provide educational and recreational opportunities for their co-workers who are usually from Central American countries and the Caribbean. These activities are determined by the interests of the people in their workplace. For example, a Labourer-Teacher might:

  • Help workers upgrade their English
  • Instruct workers on the use of the computer
  • Organize special events – a movie night, sporting event, travel to a tourist sight
  • Give out information about workplace safety and procedures and help to have it translated
  • Provide peer counselling, mediation and contact with outside agencies such as doctors, dentists, hospitals, banks
