Frontier College is Canada's original literacy organization. In London, we recruit volunteers to work with learners in the following literacy programs. We screen and train all of our volunteers before they go into the community. Nokee Kwe Native Learning Centre
Nokee Kwe Native Learning Centre works with aboriginal adults working towards getting their GED. Learning is student-centred. Frontier College tutors assist students when they have questions, conduct workshops to small groups on specific topics, and are sometimes paired one-to-one with learners. Tutors work with learners on all subjects, with a particular focus on reading, writing and math.
Youth Opportunities Unlimited
Y.O.U. offers computer-based GED courses to young adults, aged 18-25. Frontier College tutors assist students when they have questions. Tutors work with learners on all subjects, with a particular focus on reading, writing and math.
ATN Access Inc.
ATN is a non-profit organization that provides upgrading courses for adults with disabilities, with the goal of employment. Frontier College tutors are placed one-on-one with learners.
From October to April, Frontier College runs homework clubs with elementary and high school students at the following partners:
London Intercommunity Health Centre – SHAC Program
The London Intercommunity Health Centre runs the SHAC program. SHAC stands for Snack, Homework, Activity and Craft. This after-school program, which runs in the east end of the city, is open to elementary school children. Frontier College tutors help with homework and coordinate fun learning activities for the children.
Crouch Library Homework Club
The Crouch Library Homework Club is opportunity for elementary school students to get help with their homework in a fun, accessible environment. Tutors help learners with homework and conduct literacy activities and games.
London Intercommunity Health Centre – Huron and Highbury
The LIHC Homework Club is an opportunity for high school students in Northeast London to get help with their homework. Tutors work with learners one-on-one or in small groups.
Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre
The Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre runs an afterschool program for high school students in the neighbourhood. Frontier College tutors primarily help with homework and also provide mentoring for the students in the program.
Our partners for in-school tutoring are H.B. Beal Secondary School, and Sir George Ross Secondary School. At Beal, our tutors work one-to-one and in small groups with students who are struggling in all subject areas. At Ross, tutors work one-to-one and in small groups with grade 9 students who are struggling with literacy.
Frontier College runs a reading circle two times a week at the Boys and Girls Club of London. The Reading Circle program provides an opportunity for learners to enjoy stories with one-to-one support and in small groups, and includes learning games and activities to encourage participants to develop a love of reading and learning. The tutors in this program regularly organize events and special activities, such as an egg drop competition, spelling bees and making holiday decorations and writing letters to Santa.
